Orders for Drivers/Optrs



GENERAL ORDERS FOR DRIVER MT/ OPERATORs

(a)     It is the duty of all drivers to be acquainted with the unit MT standing orders, on first arrival in unit. They will study the orders and if necessary request the MT SUPVR/JCO to explain them. Thereafter they will be called upon to sign that they have understood them.
(b)     A soldier driver is directly responsible for the maintenance for the veh/eqpt on his charge. He must learn the following:-
         
(i)
The peculiarities of its make and type.
(ii)
Make himself familiar by daily inspection with the condition of its working parts.
(iii)
To report without delay any defect while he is unable to put right.

(c)     When told to take over a veh, he will check over the veh/ eqpt and test & also check the tools. If correct and satisfied, accept and sign the handing taking over note of veh/eqpt.   From then onwards he is responsible for any loss or damage to his veh/ eqpt & tools.
(d)     He will not allow any other person to drive or interfere with his veh except by the order of MTO, or the MT SUPVR/JCO.
(e)     He will make himself familiar with (i) the Highway Code and (ii) Accident Report Forms.
(f)      Before starting work for the day, he will satisfy himself that the following are in orders:-
(i)
That his veh is roadworthy. If defective, he will report that immediately to the MTO, SUPVR/JCO.
(ii)
That his radiator is full of water and there is No leakage.
(iii)
That the engine oil level is correct, oil pressure gauge (when fitted) indicated details correctly.
(iv)
That fuel system is in order, gauge is working correctly and that fuel tank is full and there is no leak.
(v)
That the tyre pressure is correct.
(vi)
Lights, horn and self-starter are all in working condition.
(vii)
Electrolyte level is correct and ammeter is reading the charge.
         
(g)     Before he goes on detail, he will:-
         
(i)
Not smoke while driving.
(ii)
Keep his head dress on duty.
(iii)
Strictly observe the highway codes.
(iv)
At all times drive with one and attention.
(v)
DO NOT carry unauthorised personnel.
(vi)
NOT deviate from the most direct route to his destination unless another is specified on his duty slip.
(vii)
Not park in an unauthorised place.
(viii)
AT NO TIME exceed the speed limit for type of veh he is driving.

 (h)    On return from a detail, he will :-
         
(i)
Enter Km reading at finish in duty slip.
(ii)
Report to the MT office and hand over the duty slip.
         
(j)      Between details, he will do “Halt maintenance” by tightening nuts and bolts, cleaning, and taking such other steps as to make his veh a better one and worthy of his unit.
(k)     At the end of the duty, he will fill up with water, oil and fuel, clean his veh, and park it in the appointed place.
(l)     During his detail if he notices any defect, which he cannot put right, he will immediately report the matter to an NCO of the MT staff.
(m)   A driver is responsible that his veh is NOT overloaded, He may NOT refuse to overload his veh own ordered, but it is his duty to register his protest, than the person order overloading become responsible. On his return from duty, case of overloading will be reported to his MT SUPVR/JCO.
(n)     He will see that No fuel is removed from the tank without permission from the MTO.
(o)     In case of breakdown during a detail, he will decide:-
         
(i)
If he can put the defect right by himself.
(ii)
If there is a necessity of someone assistance. he will contact his MTO/MT Supervisor by any media immediately giving the following particulars:-

BA No of the veh.

2
Place and time of breakdown.

3
Nature of breakdown whether collision, bogged or mechanical fault.

4
Whether recovery assistance required or not.

5
Whether help is required to off load or reload the luggage or otherwise.
         
(p)     In case of accident, the senior rank present in the veh will assure charge and will           act as follows:-
(i)
Intimate the unit immediately with possible details.
(ii)
If anybody serious, arrange/call any vehicle/ ambulance and shift them to nearest hospital. Give immediate aid to injured persons.
(iii)
Remove any dangerous obstructions and clean the road for approaching traffic.
(iv)
Order the driver to fill up the Accident Report Form, give a sketch showing width of road, surface conditions, skid marks, first and last position of veh etc, if the driver is injured and cannot fill up Accident Report, it will be made out by co-driver.
(v)
If any damage to a civilian person or property has occurred, try to report to civil police without delay and file FIR.
(vi)
If any witness is present, take their particulars.
(vii)
If any MP arrives own the scene, do not leave without his permission.
(viii)
The driver will give his name and address to any person who has reasonable grounds for asking it.

(q)     When he has been warned that his veh is due for inspection either monthly or quarterly he will carry out the following:-

(i)
Clean all the parts thoroughly.
(ii)
Clean and layout tools.
(iii)
Warm up engine.
(iv)
Remove floor boards and open trap doors.
(v)
Open or remove bonnet.
(vi)
Remove battery vent plugs.
(vii)
Remove tyre cap valves.
(viii)
Loosen oil level plug of gear box, steering box and rear axle.
(ix)
Jack up axles.
(x)
Connect up inspection lamp if provided.
(xi)
Keep log book and maintenance card with Vehicle.

 (r)     During inspection he comes under order of the inspecting officer and will carry out duties ordered by him.
(s)     If he has reason to suspect that his veh is likely to remain in wksps for more than           a day, he will hand over all tools to I/C wksp and get a receipt which should include the qty of fuel in the tank. When the veh is leaving wksp he will collect all his tools. If there is any deficiency, report it to his MT office.
(t)      No matter how many days veh remains in wksp, he will report to the wksp officer or wksp supervisor every day unless otherwise ordered.

                   DO’s AND DON’Ts
(a)     Do’s:-

(i)
Give hand singles while slowing down, overtaking, before turning and          before halting.
(ii)
Give the ‘PASS’ signal to lighter vehs.
(iii)
Pay attention to road signs, e.g. ‘Hairpin Bend Ahead’ ‘Railway Crossing’ ‘School’ etc.
(iv)
Pay attention to police traffic signals.
(v)
Be considered to cyclists and pedestrians, particularly the old and the          young.
(vi)
Observe ‘vehicles to a mile’ as laid down.
(vii)
Ensure that a broken-down veh does NOT impede other traffic.
(viii)
Dip your headlights for oncoming traffic at night.
(ix)
Negotiate bends at slow speed.
(x)
Post a traffic sentry if the veh has broken on or near the bin of steep hill.
(xi)
When approaching cross-roads, slow down and stop for one second, look to the right and left to see that no other veh is coming from the other road before moving on.
(xii)
Always slow own veh passing (i) troops on the march and (ii) Funeral processions.
(xiii)
Ensure that your tarpaulin covers are properly strapped down.
(xiv)
Ensure that you have all your necessary documents e.g. driving licence, duty slip, accident form, etc and that these are up to date before setting out on a journey.

(b)     Dont’s
         
(i)
Do NOT exceed speed limits.
(ii)
Do NOT monopolies the road, always keeping well to the left.
(iii)
Do Not’ bully’ the oncoming lighter veh by remaining in the middle of the roads and forcing it to so ‘off’ the road.
(iv)
Do NOT park in the middle of the road.
(v)
Do NOT over take unless signaled to so by the driver of the veh ahead of you.
(vi)
Do NOT overtake except on the right of the proceeding veh and then          NEVER on a bend.
(vii)
Do NOT fail to allow sufficient clearance after passing overtaken a veh, before pulling over to the left.
(viii)
Do NOT fail to appreciate speeds of oncoming or crossing veh.
(ix)
Do NOT park near bens or in narrow streets.
(x)
Do NOT forget that traffic on the main road then has priority of passing over the feeding roads.
(xi)
Do NOT reverse without ascertaining that ‘all clear’ in the rear of your veh.
(xii)
Do NOT driver dangerously.
(xiii)
Do NOT leave the veh un-attended.
(xiv)
Do NOT drive without you head-gear on.
(xv)
Do NOT allow passengers to stand in the body of the veh.
(xvi)
Do NOT refuse to give particulars of identity when called upon to do so by Civil/ Military police, but remember SECURITY.
(xvii)
Do NOT depend upon the horn to do the job of brakes.
(xviii)
Do NOT blow your horn incessantly or needlessly, or when passing by the hospitals.
(xix)
Do NOT forget to render FIRST AID in the event of an accident.
(xx)
Do NOT drive fast through streets, camps and other habitation. This may prove dangerous to pedestrians or may raise clouds of dust.
