DIESEL EXHUST FLUID (DEF)

1    In the modern vehicle/ equipment, there is an additional system is provided by the manufactures for reduce the emission and amount of air pollution created by diesel engine BS IV and above stages by the help of a fluid is known as diesel exhaust fluid. It is also known as urea in local teams. AdBlue is the one of the most commonly used brand of DEF.

2    While handling and storage of AdBlue, always give care for not contact with your skin and eye. If erroneously become contact with any body parts, immediately wash with running water and detergent, otherwise there will be some burning sensation, irritations and itches will be the result. While pouring in to the tank of vehicle/ equipment, never spilt out the mouth of the tank and flow over the body towards down. If so, wash immediately otherwise colour/ paint work will be faded/ damaged.

 

3    AdBlue fluid should be storage in the manufactures original container and keep in cooled, covered area with good ventilation and away from direct sun light. This will prevent water loss due to evaporation. The life of AdBlue is approximately 18 months. AdBlue fluid is non-flammable, but it should be removed to a safe location if there is a fire, as intense of heat may cause the sealed storage container to pressurise possible rupture. AdBlue fluid freezes at 11.5 ^oC when it thaws the product will return to its initial quality.

ADVISORY: UTILISATION OF DEF (DIESEL EXHUST FLUID)

1   Since April 2021, GOI has upgraded emission norms for V/E/Ps used in construction activities, OEMs have introduced different methods to meet the new pollution level. In this respect a system known as Selective Catalyst Reduction (SCR) is implemented by OEMs to meet emission standard BS-IV in Diesel engines.

2   In this CSR, Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF), is used to reduce the amount of air pollution created by a diesel engine Specifically, DEF is an aqueous urea solution made with 32.5 % urea and 67.5% deionised water. When DEF is injected to hot exhaust gas stream, it changes NOx gases (harmful emission) in to nitrogen and water.

3  DEF is not a fuel additive and is stored in separate tank. DEF is one of the consumables and consumption is approximately 5.7% of diesel consumption. Hence maintenance of DEF level in its tank is important to avoid deration of engine. It is also important to maintain specified quality of DEF, else it will severely change the effectiveness and reduce NOx damage the after treatment system and output of engine.

4   Online tech training over importance of DEF was conducted across BRO from 4th to 5th Apr 2022. DEF is available in market in different brand names. Oil PSU have the DEF available on Gem as IOC Clearblue (IOCL), Mak Adbul (HPCL)

5    It is requested that all user units be sensitised on importance of DEF; its use and proc on GeM for use as per reqmt.
